Space Exploration Technologies of the mind. A field guide to every breakthrough that bent the curve of human progress, and the ones still ahead.

Civilization
Unlocked

From the first shaped stone to reusable rockets and machine cognition, a few breakthroughs compounded into everything we have. This is the arc, drawn from real data, and the laws of progress that drive it.

02 / The Power Curve

Every invention multiplied human power

Specific power is the rated mechanical output of a prime mover divided by its own mass. The scale is logarithmic, so each gridline is ten times the one below it. The ladder runs from human muscle to the rocket engine, about seven orders of magnitude. Tap any node to find its entry below.

The other story: power per person

Specific power is how dense a single machine is. This is how much total power each person commands, averaged across a whole society. Both climbed. The second climbed more slowly, and it is the one that tracks GDP.

The honest caveats

    03 / The Evidence

    Progress, measured

Invention is the cause. These are the effects, every series drawn from Our World in Data. The shape repeats: nearly flat for most of history, then a near vertical climb in the last two centuries.

    04 / The Mechanisms

    The laws of progress

Progress is not random. It follows patterns regular enough to be named. These are the curves of learning, scaling, networks, and distribution that turn single inventions into compounding systems.

    05 / Earth & Space

Money, GDP, and the rock above us

From the first clay record of a debt and the first coin struck in Lydia to a planetary economy, set against the resource base of near space. Value in US dollars on a logarithmic scale, so every step is ten times the one before it.

A single metallic asteroid holds metals valued above every dollar of human output and debt combined. That figure is a resource estimate, not a bank balance. Flooding any market collapses the price, and industrial extraction remains decades away.

    The honest caveats

      06 / The Next Rails

      Foundations of the next era

The steam engine and the transistor were rails the modern world was built on. Five technologies could carry the next leap. Status today, and where each could go.

      07 / About

      About this project

Civilization Unlocked is an independent, data driven study of human progress: the inventions that bent the curve, the laws that drive it, and the scale of what is still ahead.

      01

      The idea

A few breakthroughs compounded into everything we have. This maps them as one arc, from the first shaped stone to machine cognition and the resources of near space.

      02

What it does, and does not

It charts real metrics and attributes impact on first principles. It does not claim precision for pre modern estimates, and every future node is marked as a projection, not a forecast.

      03

      Method and sources

Quantitative series come from Our World in Data, the Maddison Project, and the IMF. Invention images come from Wikimedia Commons. Each law lists its origin and source.
